Weathering Gravestones

These headstones were carved within four years of each other over 120 years ago. Yet, at first glance, one would assume that they were not the same age because one looks so much older than the other.

One of these tombstones is made out of granite (a very hard, igneous rock) while the other is made out of limestone (a softer, sedimentary rock).

Can you tell the difference?

EXERCISE: In the grave yard, find unweathered gravestones (likely made from igneous rocks) and weathered ones (likely from limestone). Remember this when you go shopping for grave stones - igneous rocks last a lot longer!
